Convened and facilitated by well-respected activist Rev. Graylan Hagler, all peace and justice groups locally, regionally, and nationally are invited to attend this important meeting focused on one question: How do we bring unity to the movement?
Here is the invitation letter:
June 19, 2005
Greetings to friends and allies in the peace and
justice movement!
Rev. Graylan Hagler and local community activists
invite you to an important meeting on Monday, June 27,
7p.m., at the Flemming Center (9th and P Streets NW at 1426 9th Street NW). All groups,
big or small, whether they be local, regional, or
national, are invited to send two representatives to attend a
meeting to work on one very important issue: "How do we
bring unity to the peace and justice movement?"
Rev. Hagler, of Plymouth Congregational United Church
of Christ, will be facilitating the meeting. He hopes
there will be full participation in this meeting by
those working hard for peace and justice in our
neighborhoods, our nation and our world.
Whether you are working on the war in Iraq, the war on
terrorism, wars in Africa, the Caribbean, Asia, or
other parts of the world, or whether you are working
on global or social justice issues, we know the
challenge is too daunting unless we find a way to talk
through our differences. Until we talk seriously about
the ways we can overcome these differences and work
together, we cannot claim any high ground in our
efforts to resolve the horrible conflicts and
injustices plaguing our globe.
Please send two representatives to talk
about one agenda item: Unity in the peace and justice
movement and how we as collective representatives of
the movement can work together to make it happen.
There are at least six ways that we can view this one
agenda item, including but not exclusive to:
- Unity among peace groups working at the national level;
- Unity among peace groups working at the local level;
- Unity between peace groups working at the national level and those
working at the local level;
- Unity between groups working on peace and groups working on other
social and global justice issues;
- Unity among groups who prefer different tactics for bringing about
social change.
- Unity among groups of varying ethnic, racial, socio-economic and
sexual orientation makeup.
The meeting isto the public, but we encourage groups to empower no
more than two representatives to speak on behalf of the groups.
Please attend, and let us know if you plan on sending
representatives to this very important meeting. Send
RSVPs to movement_unity.
In peace and solidarity,
Rev. Graylan Hagler and local community activists
