Neoconservative darling Paul Wolfowitz now struts his stuff for real, waging war on behalf of the taxpayer dime just like he and his friends at the Project for the New American Century wrote it up. |
Wolfowitz, the son of a Cornell math professor, believes deeply in the
value of calculation. His main utility for the administration has been the role of hatchet man let loose upon the world in order to
cast the decidedly militaristic Colin Powell as a moderate. All the
while, the administration has been pursuing a slow drift towards
policies that look far more like his Strangelovian fantasies rather
than Powell's subtle imperialism.
In 1967, when the rest of the youthful world was learning about free
love or protesting the Vietnam War, Wolfowitz was studying under
nuclear strategist Albert Wohlstetter, at the University of Chicago.
Wohlstetter believed that it was not only possible, but necessary, to
rationally study atomic war. That ability to think about the
unthinkable rubbed off on Wolfowitz, perhaps because, like the other
neo-cons, he passed the Vietnam years studying war rather than fighting
it.
Since a stint in 1967 as a "budget intern" (a detail strangely recorded on his official C.V.), Wolfowitz has worked in politics, including stints under every president except President Clinton. Through the years he has advocated strong support for Israel, pressed the Pentagon to develop advanced weapons systems (tough job -
they hate weapons over there), and developed a policy that keeps U.S. ships filled with armaments and supplies offshore in many parts of the world...just in case.
In 1992, while working under the former Defense Secretary Dick Cheney, he
recommended to the first President Bush that the U.S. launch
unilateral, preemptive military strikes against hostile countries
seeking to develop or acquire weapons of mass destruction. The proposal
was then deemed reckless and overly aggressive, but Wolfowitz stuck
around with his fingers crossed and was rewarded recently by the
ripening of the fanaticism that Rumsfeld and Bush Sr. carefully
cultivated in the 1980s.
Since 9-11 he has lead the charge both in the counsel rooms and in the
media for a sharp and violent response to the tragedy - "ending states
that support terrorism" as he puts it. He was an early advocate for
turning 9-11 into a tool for taking out unfriendly regimes, Saddam's
Iraq in particular. As early as October 2001, he had already
publically speculated we would invade that nation, drawing rebukes from
Colin Powell, who as time has proven, doesn't mind letting Wolfowitz
steer, but who for appearance sake must appear to control the throttle.
Wolfowitz has been able to split his time for many years between
influencing policy and influencing the youth of the nation to follow
his own youthful path away from free love and protest. For the last
seven years, Dr. Wolfowitz has served as Dean and Professor of
International Relations at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced
International Studies (SAIS) of The Johns Hopkins University. His goal
in both spheres may be sumarized follows: he hopes the United States
embraces empire wholeheartedly and with eyesto its rich spoils
and fateful choices.
In 2001 the mad professor was tapped by the Bush administration,
acending to the heights of power just in time for the big dance, and
the rest, as we say may be history.
