DC DNC & RNC Protest Coalition
The DC Anti-War Network has formed a Conventions Working Group to mobilize Washington-area people to the July Democratic National Convention in Boston and the August/September Republican National Convention in New York.
We decided that the best way to do this is to foster relationships with activists in Boston, New York, and DC. Boston and New York activist groups can help DC-area people find housing and office space. Housing will help maintain our presence at the conventions for more than a single day, while office space will help us mobilize DC activists to be most effective on the ground. DC activist groups can serve as an equal partner in the planning process so that our presence is as large, as unified, and as coordinated as possible.
While we want help from activists in Boston, New York, and DC, we also want to help local groups in each city now and in the future. We invite groups in Boston and New York to work with us so that in the next inevitable convergence on DC, they can rely on us to help provide housing and office space. Furthermore, we desire to help local groups in both cities with relevant actions contributing to the demonstrations at the conventions. Likewise, we wish to help DC-area groups with projects of interest to DAWN's anti-war and social justice message. That is, we do not simply want your help; we want ways to help you stage your events.
Our local coalition is growing, and we urge you to join. We are seeking sponsors for a conventions- related event headlining William Rivers Pitt, editor of Truthout.org.
To let the Democrats and Republicans know how they must start being responsive to the will of the people, we need to become friends and work together. If you represent a group in Boston or New York, please contact us at info or call Jim Macdonald at so that we can work together. If you are in Washington, DC, Northern Virginia as far as Richmond, or Maryland as far away as Baltimore, please contact us and join us for our planning meetings. Let us know how we can help you and how you might be able to help us. Even if you only plan on going to one convention or another, we could use your help. If you are an individual without a group and interested in our planning, you may also contact or join us.
If you are outside the Boston, New York, or Washington areas and want or need help, you should contact us as well. While we are focusing our energies on these three areas, we all have a vital interest in making these convergences overwhelming and effective. In short, we all can use all the help we can get.
